Background
This is the 7th event of the "Database and Ontology mini-series" of talks and discussions, during which this community will be exploring the landscape, issues and interactions between databases and ontologies.

This is a community-driven set of activities, and is probably long overdue. On 15-Aug-2006, Tatiana Malyuta (who just joined the community after participating at our 23-Jul-2006 face-to-face workshop at Stanford, brought up her request for the Ontolog Forum to delve into the subject of "Database and Ontologiy." An almost unprecedented flurry of online responses were received from the community. It was decided that we could systematically pursue the subject by mounting a min-series on the matter at hand.

A planning meeting for this mini-series took place on 31-Aug-2006. Matthew West was invited to champion the effort, and a "Program & Technical Advisory Team" was formed, comprising Matthew West (Lead), Adrian Walker, Atilla Elci, Chris Partridge, Leo Obrst, Peter P. Yim, Susie Stephens & TatianaMalyuta.

See also: DatabaseAndOntology (the 'project' homepage for this mini-series)

The community is requested to contribute their thoughts by posting to [ontolog-forum] or to the DatabaseAndOntology wiki page (and/or its subpages). We hope to accumulate and synthesize the knowledge gathered and compile it into a written deliverable (a paper or even a handbook) that we could publish this collaboratively authored work to other relevant media and channels (like relevant conferences or the wikipedia.)

Agenda & Proceedings: "Database And Ontology" - Mini-series Session-7
* Session Format: this is a virtual session conducted over an augmented conference call.

* Agenda:
** 1. Opening by the Session Chair - Matthew West
** 2. we'll go around with a self-introduction of participants (10~15 minutes) - All - we'll skip this if we have moe than 20 participants (in which case, it will be best if members try to update their namesake pages on this wiki prior to the call so that everyone can get to know who's who more easily.)
** 2. Introduction of the invited speaker - Matthew West
** 3. Invited Speaker Presentation (60~75 minutes) - Tatiana Malyuta
** 5. Q & A and Open discussion by all participants (20~30 minutes)
** 7. Summary / Conclusion / Follow-up by the Session Chair - Matthew West (~5 minutes)

Topic: "Interaction of Ontology and Database in the Information System" by Professor Tatiana Malyuta
::: http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/DatabaseAndOntology/2007-05-10_TatianaMalyuta/tmalyuta_20070510.png [Professor Tatiana Malyuta]

Abstract (by TatianaMalyuta)
The presentation discusses some issues on the interaction of Ontology and Database in Information Systems (IS):

* Distribution of "responsibilities" between Ontology and Database:
** what are the role and place of Ontology in IS,
** how much semantics to leave within the database, and
** how to integrate the Database semantics with Ontology.

* Symbiosis of Ontology and Database:
** during the IS life-cycle,
** how changes and growth of Database will affect Ontology,
** how evolution of Ontology will be reflected in Database,
** and how to support this relationship and benefit from it.

* Using Ontology for efficient data utilization in general and data integration in particular.

* Using Ontology for support of Human-Computer Interfaces.

The discussion will relate to previous talks on this mini-series about importance and benefits of ontology in IS, using ontology in database design, communicating to the database from ontology, and improving quality of data with the help of ontology.

About the Invited Speaker
: Tatiana Malyuta started her career in Ukraine. Her research, industry and teaching experience and interests are connected to data and databases. She has a PhD in Computer Science, and her doctoral thesis dealt with presentation and management of imprecise data in relational databases. She participated in design and implementation of databases for numerous information systems in Ukraine and later in USA. Her latest projects involve design and implementation of metadata and ontology for special applications, such as:

*
** the Downtown Brooklyn project that prototypes a media-rich interactive navigation system in a media-rich document environment at New York City College of Technology.

: Currently, Tatiana is an Associate Professor of Computer Systems Technology Department of the New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York where she is coordinating and teaching advanced database courses. She wrote a textbook "Physical Design and Implementation of Relational Databases" and conducts a scientific colloquium on newest data technologies.
** Peter Brown: Question (for later): how is an "ontological dictionary" different from a dictionary? Isn't this tautological?
** Peter Brown: One last thought, but I have to go soon...: I'm thinking that Tatiana's answer to my question isn't too far from my concern, I would just argue that ontologies exist *already* in enterprises - businesses have their own implicit and explicit vocabularies, independently of information systems. It's only IT people that are finally getting around to discovering them and formalising them. The problem we're trying to address now is how to (re-)align information systems with those "ontologies", because historically they may have been badly designed. It is far more valuable to capture an "ontology" from business/organisation users who have an intimate knowledge of the enterprise (top-down approach) than try to extract it from existing ISs that are anyway imperfect representations of the real world (bottom-up)... Sorry guys, I've got to go...Apologies for dropping this and running Talk again soon.

* ... More Questions
