== Background ==

This is the 7th event of the "[[DatabaseAndOntology|Database and Ontology mini-series]]" of talks and discussions, during which this community will be exploring the landscape, issues and interactions between databases and ontologies.

This is a community-driven set of activities, and is probably long overdue. On 15-Aug-2006, [[TatianaMalyuta|Tatiana Malyuta]] (who just joined the community after participating at our 23-Jul-2006 face-to-face workshop at Stanford, brought up her request for the Ontolog Forum to delve into the subject of "Database and Ontologiy." An almost unprecedented flurry of online responses were received from the community. It was decided that we could systematically pursue the subject by mounting a min-series on the matter at hand.

A planning meeting for this mini-series took place on 31-Aug-2006. [[MatthewWest|Matthew West]] was invited to champion the effort, and a "Program & Technical Advisory Team" was formed, comprising [[MatthewWest|Matthew West]] (Lead), [[AdrianWalker|Adrian Walker]], [[AtillaElci|Atilla Elci]], [[ChrisPartridge|Chris Partridge]], [[LeoObrst|Leo Obrst]], [[PeterYim|Peter P. Yim]], [[SusieStephens|Susie Stephens]] & TatianaMalyuta.

The community is requested to contribute their thoughts by posting to [ontolog-forum] or to the [[DatabaseAndOntology]] wiki page (and/or its subpages). We hope to accumulate and synthesize the knowledge gathered and compile it into a written deliverable (a paper or even a handbook) that we could publish this collaboratively authored work to other relevant media and channels (like relevant conferences or the wikipedia.)

The presentation discusses some issues on the interaction of Ontology and Database in Information Systems (IS):

* Symbiosis of Ontology and Database:
** during the IS life-cycle,

* Using Ontology for efficient data utilization in general and data integration in particular.

* Using Ontology for support of Human-Computer Interfaces.

: '''Tatiana Malyuta''' started her career in Ukraine. Her research, industry and teaching experience and interests are connected to data and databases. She has a PhD in Computer Science, and her doctoral thesis dealt with presentation and management of imprecise data in relational databases. Her latest projects involve design and implementation of metadata and ontology for special applications, such as:

It's only IT people that are finally getting around to discovering them and formalising them. The problem we're trying to address now is how to (re-)align information systems with those "ontologies", because historically they may have been badly designed. It is far more valuable to capture an "ontology" from business/organisation users who have an intimate knowledge of the enterprise (top-down approach) than try to extract it from existing ISs that are anyway imperfect representations of the real world (bottom-up)...
